You Need To Know Fragrances Are Seriously Bad For Your Health: Here's Why

Uncategorized May 25, 2020

I have to share this with you after having locked horns with a 'mindset coach' on social media, who was posting and encouraging people to use perfume to make themselves feel better when they feel low in mood.

Now, I don't disagree with the sentiment, but it actually is contributing to a huge problem in our society. It's another bullshit bandaid way of trying to help someone manage their 'mental health', and also perfume is a well known contributor to mental health and physical health issues!

Encouraging someone to use perfume to feel better is unsafe when you know how toxic perfume is and the damage it does to your mental and physical health

This post is not an attack on said 'mindset coach' but I think the post was naive and typical of the battle I as a holistic mental health professional am facing who's trying to empower people to improve their health on every level, Mind and body are one... Again that's for another blog post.

Until then know this!

Fragranced products can certainly make you feel warm, fuzzy and special, and all things in your home smell delightful.

It’s hard to deny a spritz of your favourite expensive perfume or fabric conditioned warm sheets and a sparkling clean bathroom all make you feel satisfied and even comforted.

However, I have to tell you there's a dark side and price to pay for this artificial and short lived surface level sense of comfort.

Added scents and fragrances are great for making products seem more effective & healthier.  If you’re like most people, you probably assume that fragrances are 100% safe, and have no effect what so ever on your emotional and physical health, and that’s exactly what manufacturers want you to think.

Sadly, and more terrifyingly, artificial fragrances being safe couldn't be further from the truth, and YES they do impact on your emotional physical health as well as your families.

To arm you with the information you need for you to make safe product choices for you and your family, I've compiled what I believe are the top 7 things manufacturers don’t want you to know about artificial fragrance safety.

  1. Fragrances are linked to a staggering number of  health risks. Across multiple research studies, chemicals used to make fragrances are classified as allergens, hormone disrupters, asthma triggers, neuro toxins and carcinogens! FACT: fragrances are highly toxic.
  2. Fragrances commonly contain phthalates which are chemicals that help the scents last longer. Do your research, health risks around using phthalates are terrifying and include cancer! Don't believe me, just google it!
  3. Like any other substance, especially Fragrance chemicals, they're like other toxic chemicals and can pass straight through the skin and in to your blood stream, even effecting your immunity.
  4. Manufacturers are not required to list their fragrance ingredients on product labels.  Often only one word, “fragrance”, is used on the label and can hide an absolute sickening cocktail of more than 100 toxic chemicals.
  5. The fragrance industry regulates itself, so that safety testing does not have to be confirmed by regulators before products are sold to consumers. Dodgy or what!!
  6. So called “natural fragrances” can be just as toxic as synthetic fragrances.
  7. Whether it’s in cleaning products, deodorants (don't get me started on these, that's a blog post on it's own and is coming your way), shampoos, or laundry detergents, fragrance chemicals aren’t actually making your product perform any better or really making you feel any better about yourself– they're just giving you that perception. You've been brain washed to think that clean has a smell, when in truth that’s not the case.

Please believe me when I tell you fragrances are linked to so many profound health risks that avoiding them is probably the #1 change you can make to reduce your family’s exposure to toxic chemicals.

To avoid fragrances, the Environmental Working Group advise that consumers read the word “fragrance” or “parfum” and translate it to mean “hidden chemicals”.

This is why I use quality certified therapeutic pure essential oils and doTERA's other various products such as onGuard laundry detergent or their shampoo and conditioner.

Making my own products using essential oils, (lemon is fantastic for cleaning my oven), not only is non toxic and safe, I'm also getting the aroma benefits of the oils at the same time.

So, instead of coughing from burning lungs or an itchy, dry throat after cleaning my oven or bathroom, I get a natural uplift that's real and long lasting because it's impossible not to smile when you inhale any authentic citrus smell.

True health is a process of 1) eliminating toxins, 2) eating the right healthy foods/ supporting your body with good nutrition, 3) getting some exercise, 4) having a laugh 5) doing what you love/living with purpose 6) de-stressing with meditation and expanding your heart with gratitude!
